We all know what it means to be healthy - free of illness or disease, physically robust, and full of energy and vitality. Wellness, however, encompasses far more than physical well-being. Wellness involves the optimal well-being of the mind, body and spirit, all of which contribute to our achieving our potential and maximizing our quality of life. It is typically defined as including eight dimensions of well-being:

(1) physical - maintaining a healthy body through nutrition, exercise, the avoidance of high risk habits and behaviors, and seeking medical advice as needed
(2) intellectual - engaging in stimulating learning experiences that promote cognitive development
(3) emotional - understanding and experiencing the full range of human emotion in a healthy balance, coping with stress and frustration in self-affirming ways, and developing a positive sense of self
(4) social - cultivating mutually beneficial relationships with individuals and the community at large
(5) occupational - using your interests, skills and talents to develop a satisfying career
(6) spiritual - having a sense of meaning and purpose in life
(7) environmental -having awareness of your surroundings, your impact on them, and their impact on your well being
(8) financial - understanding your relationship to money and creating a financial situation that allows you to balance current financial needs with preparing for future (both anticipated and unanticipated) financial needs

Each April New Jersey City University offers a broad array of programs designed to help students, employees and the surrounding community to enhance these various dimensions of wellness in their lives.
