At the graduation commencement meeting today, a couple of committee members presented numerous letters and comments posted by students on the Gothic Times website. They argued that not reversing the decision could present undesirable results at graduation. The argument was then brought to President Hernandez and he agreed.
It should be noted that a number of SGO members were instrumental in getting the word out to students in order to apply pressure to the university to reverse it's policy-most notably, Senior Class President, Kristen Donner, Senior Class V.P., Elizabeth Rolon, Student Trustee Representative, Janet Nunn, SGO President Marcus Rosado, Vice President of Public Information, Tiffany McQueary and a select number of SGO clubs and representatives.
Lincoln Nubian Farquharson, president of the Caribbean Students Association explained that, "If cool, level, heads do not prevail in order to achieve a compromise, there will be losers on both side." Others like Makhete Cisse, president of the Political Alliance Society felt that having people sign a "boycott graduation" petition was the way to go.
But the biggest accolades go out to every student that took the time out of their busy schedules to submit letters, post comments, contact the university and media via phone or email for the reversal in policy. Most students were more concerned with having their families enjoy the full experience, rather than their individual recognition.
Now the pressure is on the seniors to step up and convince their fellow classmates to stay till the end of graduation commencement. If not, the university may reconsider their decision today-come graduation in 2008.
More details on this developing story to follow over the next several days.
In the meantime, congratulations to the seniors and all students who spoke out and never gave up. This reversal in policy provides evidence that using student organizations to speak out CAN make a difference!
TO ALL SENIORS! Please come out and celebrate this new victory by attending the Senior Class Luncheon at Puccini's Restaurant in Jersey City on April 15th 12p-4pm.
