more and more involved with
school activities. This revival of
campus life is the product of the
influential power of the many
diverse clubs and organizations,
and this will be furthered even
more now that the newly recognized
Political Science Alliance
(PSA) and the up-and-coming
Spoke-N-Heard Poetry Club
(SNH) are on board.
Makete Cissie, president, April
Fazelat, vice president, Debony
Miller, secretary, and Pam Andes,
treasurer, received student
government recognition for the
Political Science Alliance on
February 8, 2007. "We wanted
to have a place for students to
meet and talk about local and
national politics…and inform
them on how they can get involved
in politics at a local level,"
says Fazelat.
This organization is committed
to helping students realize the
importance of understanding the
United States Constitution and
being aware of the privileges
and rights of voting citizens.
The PSA will be providing resources
about pre-law programs
available throughout the local
area that will assist NJCU's aspiring
lawyers with the application
process for law school.
The organization will also host
a study group that will meet
three times a week to help students
prepare thoroughly for the
Law School Admissions Test.
Although these activities will
primarily be beneficial to political
science majors, the PSA's
membership is open to all registered
students.
The PSA will also sponsor
open forums that will address
local and state issues affecting
NJCU, such as state funding and
budget cuts.
On the artistic front is the
Spoke-N-Heard Poetry Club,
which is earnestly anticipating
SGO recognition in March.
SNH is an acknowledged poetry
club in the tri-state area, its
founding chapter centered at
Purchase College in New York.
The second chapter was formed
at CUNY City University in
Manhattan, and the third at
Monroe College in the Bronx.
"I decided to start the chapter
here because I love poetry," said
Jamal Hinnant, AKA "Jskillz,"
president of the club. "I love
writing it, listening to it, and
reading it."
The club does not require a poetic
disposition, only an emotion,
idea, or anything ready to
be stripped from its drab, uninspired
clothing, reborn through
words, and unleashed onto the
campus community - and, of
course, a registration paper.
Members will be encouraged to
participate in writing and performance
workshops every
week and other events, such as
open mics and competitions, to
enhance conviction in self-expression.
"While mentoring their capability
to think skillfully and critically,
we strive to instill personal
responsibility to the NJCU
community and respect for others.
We believe that it is possible
to transform lives through written
word by providing an environment
where souls are free to
create pure art," states Hinnant.
The L S A T study group hosted by the PSA
is held every Monday from 2pm-3pm, Wednesday from 7pm-8pm, and Thursday from 4:30pm-5:30pm in Karnoutsos Hall Room 602.
SNH will meet every Wednesday at 3pm in the Science Building room 118.
Students will be informed of any changes in these schedules.
