Awareness = Chic at Runway Peace Project

But the runway isn't the only method that this project will fulfill its mission of informing and engaging the students and the community. Music and poetry stand to make an impact; "Models themselves will be reading poetry pieces", according to Moreira.
Lincoln Farquharson, an international business major, is one such individual who is spearheading the process of recruiting and preparing the models for a runway show. Quharson explains, "I see a potential. Most people don't live on campus but they wanted to be involved anyway. It's gratifying - working with people that are serious. I thought I had something to contribute."
The "cat-walk coach", "Lulu", Merlude Narcisse is also lending her talents to rain various models with little or no runway experience. Regarding her
motivation for participating in this
event, "I like how this [Runway Project]
brings awareness to women's health issues and shows the diversity of different cultures to the public. I didn't know the school had a women's department [Speicher-Rubin Women's Center] dedicated to these issues- but it [Runway Project]
opened my eyes." Narcisse explains.
Supporting the Runway Peace Project
is a variety of student organizations
and establishments in the community that are working with the students to make the show a success. "I felt this would benefit women's rights and political awareness, explains Damaris Escarmente, President of the Caribbean Society Association and
one of the sponsors of Runway Peace Project. Another sponsor, Gem Jefferson, Junior Class President added, "Renata is working very hard with no budget and I felt it was important for me as class [junior] officer to contribute to a just cause. This is the first time I'm sponsoring an event as junior class council."
Professional hairstylists and makeup artists will be lending their talents as well as working together with NJCU students, giving them a handson experience in an aspect of the fashion field.
Stores, various jewelry designers and other members of the Jersey City community have stepped up to provide support and materials for the runway show. Another Man's Treasure and World of Style are two vintage stores that are providing their services to the Runway Peace Project. Balance Hair is also going to be working with students for hair and makeup.
The models themselves have very passionate
motivations for participating in the Runway Project. Pia Simone Ruth, a junior and Health Science major states, "I'm into women's health issues and what women have to go through in other countries because of the [Iraq] war. And I like to know what's going on and have fun." And hope to "Bring more awareness. It's not a community issue - it's a world issue and it's something that needs to be talked about more."
