In the mid-1990s - I don't recall the exact year, but my dad was still living - he and I were together for New Year's, just the two of us and a brew or two. "Well," he said to me, "Now that communism is gone, when capitalism crashes, where do we go from here?" His question seems very relevant this week.

The issue of the excessive "compensation" for our former President Caputo (as well as other former administrators) must be addressed. The purported $300,00 plus given to the former President represents not a salary, but rather the remainder of a contract awarded precociously, and in the absence of any discernible performance review.

When asked for one one word to describe the price of books, Shanice Owens, a sophomore Sociology major, says, "outrageous."
Owens shares the same view of the prices of books with many other students.
"You don't even get back half what you pay for the textbooks," says Owens, citing the end of the semester when students sell their books back in hopes to get back some of their money.

As college students, we are taught to open our minds and consider different viewpoints and opinions before coming to a conclusion. But how can we be expected to make an educated decision about our vote, a decision that will potentially have a huge impact on our future and the future of our nation, without having access to both sides of the issues?

Behind the scenes in Mead Hall, the future of Drew is starting to become realized in a master plan. While the plan is not finalized and the goals are long-term, Weisbuch looks as if he will give Drew a bigger face lift than any of us dreamed. And to think we thought new windows and paint on some buildings were surprising.

Dear Editor,
Last week's Acorn featured a letter to the editor decrying the provocative article, "It's not size that counts…" in the Sept. 19 issue. This letter unfairly chastised the article's author and the editorial board of The Acorn from a vantage point that dismissed context, and inappropriately infantilized the entire College of the Liberal Arts community.

With the 2008 presidential election rapidly approaching, student groups on campus have been doing a fantastic job registering first time voters - but what if these students do not have the opportunity to go out and vote?
A total of 1,950 new voters were registered last year at Drexel, and events this year have registered 1,600 more students, as reported by The Triangle in the April 4 and Oct.

It's always about this time of year that I start to lose the middle ground between working hard and playing hard.
At this point in the semester, I actually have to produce grade-able work and complete time-intensive reading assignments. From Sunday through Thursday I'm a human dynamo of nervous energy - constantly churning out papers and practice exams.

Patrick Reilly and the Cardinal Newman Society have overstepped their bounds. As an organization that purports to value the importance of Catholic education, their recent foray into challenging the moral integrity of Fordham Law School has demonstrated that they should avoid involvement in anything more nuanced than the broad side of a barn, much less academia.

I'm confused.
If I would need a doctor to perform a life-altering procedure, I would choose the person with the most experience possible, whose walls were plastered with certificates for everything and anything (I wouldn't care if they were awards for a pie eating contest, just as long as they show that this doctor's got commitment).

To understand is not to condone.
Unfortunately, this is difficult for some to comprehend. Some prefer to operate under the assumption that all things are equal, and nuance does not exist. In their minds, to write about a topic is to legitimize it, to discuss something forbidden is suddenly to claim it is permitted.

Fear, panic and uncertainty struck college students all around the country as the formatting for facebook changed over to the "new" format. These students failed to realize that they are better off; change is always good and in this case, it is monumental.

It has recently been discovered that an amendment in the constitution for the Student Government Association, Inc. was illegal. Now, every single Montclair State University student will vote to see if the SGA will be dissolved.
The amendment, added way back in 1977, stated that if the SGA ever was dissolved, "the remaining assets shall be transferred and distributed to the members of the corporation in equal shares.

I logged in to Facebook about a week and a half ago and was immediately confused. I saw a convoluted version of the social networking website I have come to know, love, and utilize to stalk people I may or may not know over the Internet. I was furious.
What my esteemed colleague, David Ellison, does not realize is that this new Facebook simply complicates the process of "social networking.

To the Editor:
Last Friday, I attended the brownbag, "Why Most Feminists Support Obama," which was hosted by the College Democrats. I thought it was a great success, as did most people I talked to. Students and professors of various political stripes attended to hear Professors Byrd and Washington discuss the various issues that feminism encompasses, and why they believed that Senator Obama is better suited to address those issues than his opponent, Senator McCain.

For those of you who are not aware, there has been a recent discussion regarding Pace's sexual assault policy and protocol. There basically isn't one. It came to the attention last semester when a student was sexually assaulted on William Street while walking from school to her dorm.

The Federal Reserve announced Sept. 16 the bailout of insurance giant AIG. The rescue - in the form of a loan - is an act unprecedented in the history of the Federal Reserve. The government now, in effect, possesses a controlling interest in a gigantic private organization.

There is not a lot of time left before the most important class for your major this semester. As you try and log onto Blackboard, the system fails and there is temporary maintenance being done on the program. If Blackboard still had been running at the time, you would have seen the assignment due next class or the fact that class was cancelled.

Over the past year, presidential hopeful Barack Obama has emphasized the need for economic and tax reform, both of which-he claims-could lead to a more just and fair redistribution of wealth in the U.S.
Obama's tax increases on the "wealthy" have been at the forefront of his economic plan, but the question remains whether or not these increases will penalize more than just the rich.

Many voters had already decided that Sarah Palin was incapable and dim-witted before seeing her interview with Charlie Gibson for ABC on Sept. 13. People who hear reports about the interview before seeing it themselves say that Palin sounds coached but cornered.

If you type the words "Joe Biden" into Google, the Web page will kindly offer you the related search of "Joe Biden gaffes." Type "Sarah Palin," and a "Sarah Palin Katie Couric interview" suggestion will follow. Ridiculous statements and horrifically executed interviews are intrinsically linked-at least as far as Google sees it-to the current vice-presidential candidates.

As yet another semester begins at Montclair State University, a new set of problems arise that people complain and whine about. Some are fixed and some aren't, but on the whole, no one is truly satisfied.
One of the problems that finds its way to the top of the complaint list is the shuttle bus situation we have had on campus for years.
